Hi, I’m Lyra
Lyra was born December 7th and was part of Kim’s litter—“The North Carolina Pigs.” She was the runt and could fit in the palm of our hand. She was orange with small black spots—her “chocolate chips” as we like to call them.
When Lyra was just a day old her neck got injured and she had a small gash on her. Lyra was taken to Michigan State University for hospital care, where she stayed for a couple of weeks.
When Lyra was healthy enough to be released, Dan took care of her at his house for several weeks to keep a close eye on her. Lyra got so much special attention as a young piglet in recovery that she and Dan became friends. She’d sleep by his fireplace, snuggle with his dogs, and of course cuddle up to Dan each evening.
Eventually, she came back to the sanctuary to reintegrate with the other piglets. Because she had not been there to bond with Kim and her siblings, Lyra moved in with Arlo, another small piglet. Over time, Lyra was slowly re-introduced to her littermates and mother. Today, Lyra lives with her family in the pig barn.
Lyra has a unique bond with humans. She comes when called, and she will flop right over for Dan or others to get belly rubs. She became fast friends with Little Dude, and you can often find them snuggled up together—belly-to-belly.
