Hi, I’m Ginger
In May of 2019, Barn Sanctuary was contacted about a young lamb in Iowa who was born blind and with front leg deformities. Her family had done everything they could to take care of her but did not have the resources for the extensive medical care she needed, so Dan drove to Iowa to evaluate Ginger’s condition.
After talking to Ginger’s human family and understanding her needs, Dan thought Ginger would be a great fit at Barn Sanctuary and believed they could provide her with the medical care she so desperately needed.
Since Ginger’s medical condition was so severe and complex, Dan drove directly from Iowa to Ohio State University (OSU) Veterinary Medical Center to have her examined. After consulting with Dr. Niehaus, Ginger was scheduled for surgery to try and fix her worst leg in hopes of improving her mobility and quality of life. Leaving Ginger at OSU the same day they rescued was difficult but Dan knew it was in her best interest.
Anxiously waiting to hear how Ginger’s surgery went, Dan received a call from Dr. Niehaus, and thankfully Ginger did amazingly well! After a few more days in the hospital, she was able to come to Barn Sanctuary to recover.
Unfortunately, not long after coming home, Ginger developed an infection in the operative leg and had to return to OSU for a second surgery. We knew we had to give Ginger the greatest chance at life, and that she was in the best care with Dr. Niehaus and team, so we patiently waited for nearly a month. And thankfully, her infection finally cleared, and Ginger was able to return home for good! Ginger’s mobility is improving but is still a work in progress.
Your sponsorship will help Ginger receive the extensive medical care and rehabilitation she will need for the rest of her life. Please be a part of giving Ginger a happy, fulfilling life at the sanctuary.
